Cox Communications Selects Arbor Networks' Peakflow SP for Traffic Engineering and Network Security

Leading broadband provider gains real-time awareness of behavior across its entire network; reduces peering and transit costs and improves service for its customers

LEXINGTON, Mass.– March 22, 2004 – Arbor Networks, a leading provider of network integrity solutions, today announced that broadband provider Cox Communications has deployed Arbor’s Peakflow SP traffic module to analyze its transit, peering and internal traffic. The analysis provided by Peakflow enables Cox to more effectively engineer its backbone and plan for network growth.

A Fortune 500 company, Cox Communications is a multi-service broadband communications company with approximately 6.6 million total customers and is the nation’s fourth-largest cable television provider. As the operator of a large, complex network, Cox faces security and operational challenges ranging from zero-day attacks to peering instability.

“We first deployed Peakflow SP’s DoS module to protect our network from DoS attacks,” said Randy Kinsey, manager of network engineering and architecture at Cox. “We found that Peakflow gave us visibility into the behavior of our network. When we later decided to expand our traffic monitoring beyond peering to include internal traffic analysis, it made sense to evaluate Peakflow SP’s traffic module. We are now using a single platform to address both security and operations.”

Equipped with Peakflow SP, Cox is making more effective capacity planning decisions. The provider can now more accurately predict the impact of normal network growth as well as that of proposed changes to its network such as the rollout of new applications and services. Cox also uses Peakflow SP’s analysis to make better backbone engineering decisions. Peakflow SP’s analysis helps Cox operators identify network changes that they can make to reduce network load or route traffic around network hotspots. Such changes make the network more responsive to the demands of Cox’s business. With better visibility into network behavior, Cox can best leverage its existing transit and peering in the short-term and select the best possible transit and peering relationships over the long-term.

“Leading cable providers like Cox are deploying Peakflow SP to address their immediate security and traffic challenges,” said Tom Schuster, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Arbor. “Many of these providers are also using Peakflow SP’s traffic analysis to engineer their networks to support the addition of VoIP and IP/TV services to their existing IP data networks.”

Peakflow SP is the most broadly deployed network integrity solution in the world, with over 40 customers that include leading service providers and MSOs in North America, Europe and Asia Pacific, and the U.S. Department of Defense.
