Arbor Networks Named a Company to Watch by Red Herring and Network World

Company's Innovative Approach to Improving Network Availability Hailed as Efficient and Elegant

WALTHAM, Mass., April 23, 2001-- Arbor Networks, a provider of managed availability services, today announced it has been named to the Red Herring "Ten to Watch" and the Network World "Ten Start-Ups to Watch in 2001." Launched in February 2001, Arbor offers a distributed, non-intrusive, carrier-class service that proactively detects, traces, and filters threats to network availability, such as denial of service attacks. The company has received $11 million in Series A financing from two blue chip funding partners, Battery Ventures and Cisco Systems, Inc.

"Solutions designed for the enterprise environment cannot effectively counter the increasingly complex network threats faced by service and content providers. Distributed threats require a distributed solution that acknowledges the performance and reliability demands of a carrier-class infrastructure," said chief scientist and co-founder Dr. Farnam Jahanian. "This recognition from Red Herring and Network World validates the market opportunity and the strength of our architecture."

Based upon a compilation of subjective and metrical data favored by venture capitalists and investment bankers, Red Herring's editors chose Arbor Networks as a company to watch. They describe its technology as, "efficient and elegant," and note that "Arbor Networks is in the right market at the right time." They go on to say that Arbor's "technology allows ISPs to monitor their networks for denial of service (DoS) attacks without interrupting the network's flow. It's a subtle technological point, yet an important one to carriers, who have trouble enough managing increasingly complex networks."

The editors of Network World also laud Arbor Networks as one of the top ten networking companies "sharp enough for the long haul." Network World's editors chose companies primarily based on the innovation they have shown in creating new products or services aimed at addressing challenging new business needs and opening new markets. Based on the innovation of the service, industry experience of its founders, and testimonials from its beta testers, the editors go on to note that Arbor Networks "stands out for its technology, speed to market and investors." Network World also highlights that the Arbor technology is "designed to trace distributed denial-of-service attacks and filter out offending traffic without affecting network speed."

About the Red Herring "Ten to Watch"
Published in the May issue, the Red Herring "Ten to Watch" is held in conjunction with the Red Herring 100 and identifies the ten companies believed to be noteworthy in the coming year. In its fifth year, the annual Red Herring 100 has become the most revered list of its kind. The editors of Red Herring compile the list from the same qualitative insights used by venture capitalists and investment bankers-- insights that predict a company's ability to overturn existing markets or create entirely new ones. Whatever the state of public and private equity markets; these companies will matter.

The list, featured in the May 2001 issue and on Red Herring's website www.redherring.com, includes highly relevant information including the company's strategy, execution, products and services, brand, finances and competition. Joining the world's most influential thought leaders in finance, technology and business innovation, the Red Herring 100 will be recognized at Venture 2001, Red Herring's annual invitation-only summit to be held April 29 through May 1, 2001 at the Resort at Squaw Creek, Lake Tahoe, CA.
