Arbor Networks Founder Honored by the University of Michigan

Farnam Jahanian Receives Distinguished University Innovator Award for Lasting Contributions to Science and the Economy

Chelmsford, Mass., April 2, 2009 – Arbor Networks, a leading provider of secure service control solutions for global business networks, announced today that company founder Farnam Jahanian has received the 2009 Distinguished University Innovator Award from the University of Michigan, where he serves as Chair of the Computer Science and Engineering Division in the College of Engineering. This award recognizes Jahanian’s important and lasting contributions both to science, through groundbreaking research, and to the economy, by successfully commercializing the technology through Arbor Networks.

Jahanian was honored last night at a ceremony on the University of Michigan campus, where he gave a public address on his research and entrepreneurial efforts, entitled "Securing the Internet Cloud: A Perspective on Seeding Innovation and Technology Transfer."

Stephen R. Forrest, vice president for research at the University of Michigan said, "Professor Jahanian’s research into fundamental Internet architectural and security limitations has produced solutions that have had a profound effect on society at large. In addition, by commercializing the technology through the highly successful Arbor Networks and keeping Arbor’s R&D hub in Ann Arbor, Professor Jahanian helped to establish this region as an attractive and growing area for the network security industry."

Jahanian and his research group at the University conducted pioneering research during the late 1990s that demonstrated some fundamental limitations of Internet architecture at the time. Working jointly with students Craig Labovitz (now Arbor Networks’ Chief Scientist) and Robert Malan (now Arbor Networks’ co-founder and CTO), he was able to demonstrate the nature of critical systemic security weaknesses, as well as how to change network routing and operations to address the shortcomings.

As a result of this research, Jahanian and Malan co-founded Arbor Networks in 2000 to commercialize these technologies. Today, Arbor is a leading provider of secure service control solutions for global business networks, including more than 70 percent of the world’s Internet service providers. The company continues to grow and last year launched an R&D expansion in Ann Arbor, where it expects to add more than 50 jobs over the next few years.

"I am honored to be recognized by the University with this award," Jahanian said. "I believe that universities are, and will increasing become uniquely central to the innovation ecosystem that will drive our economy. This innovation, combined with entrepreneurship and technology transfer programs, creates a powerful engine for economic growth."

Farnam Jahanian is Chair of Computer Science and Engineering in the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan and Chairman of the Board of Arbor Networks. He is a widely recognized, award-winning expert in network security. His breakthrough research led to a fundamental shift in how the Internet is protected from security threats, and culminated in the establishment of Arbor Networks, Inc. Just this past year, Jahanian, Arbor co-founder Rob Malan, and Arbor Chief Scientist Craig Labovitz were recognized with the prestigious ACM SIGCOMM Test of Time Award for their groundbreaking paper on Internet routing instability. In 2006, Jahanian was awarded the first annual Governor’s University Award for Commercialization Excellence. A Fellow of IEEE, he is the recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, and in 2000 received the DARPA Innovation Award.
